Denver's POPFILTER has been through a few name changes and probably a few capitalization battles over the last two years. The name they landed on, however, is a sound destination. Their first single "Empire" is a powerful ballad that demonstrates that bubblegum pop can be harvested, steeped, and filtered for a rich brew.
The song combines cleverly composed pop melodies, masterful production, and hopeful lyrics. When I say hopeful, I really mean it. For a cynic it might be a painful exercise—but maybe a necessary one. Sometimes we need to be faced with positive music after binging on over-sexed beats or heart-wrenching guitar. Plus, it helps that POPFILTER's chorus-writing is comparable to a vice grip. Seriously, wait a few days and see if you can't sing along to "Empire," even with the grouchiest outlook.
