Violin and piano duo Gracie and Rachel spin hauntingly beautiful orchestral pop out of dark and light. They aren't your usual Brooklyn band–and that's precisely the reason they're headlining my showcase April 14 at The Gateway. Never afraid to experiment and constantly blurring genres, be prepared for a set of sharp musicianship from Gracie and Rachel.
Get to know the girls so you can hum a few tunes at the show:
If your live performance could be compared to a scene from a movie, what would it be?
The Hours when Virginia Woolf goes into the water to die. That makes it sound like our music is really morbid, but more hopefully just that it encapsulates that kind of beautiful darkness.
Favorite other Brooklyn/NYC band?
Rachel's favorite right now is My Brightest Diamond.
Favorite place in New York?
Brooklyn Botanical Gardens or under our covers.
We usually make any stragglers leave the green room so we can get into the zone as a band, remind each other to do certain things for certain songs if we've had last minute changes, and then we take some nice deep breaths and say, "see you on the other side."
